The sale of Manchester United

The owners of Manchester United (the Glazier family) are said to be considering selling the club as part of a strategic review of their sports portfolio holdings.  The Glaziers took full control of the club in 2005 and from the start they have been faced with fan opposition in the stands and declining performances on the pitch. Maybe they feel now is the time to cash in?

Estimates of the asking price range from £5 billion to £9 billion. As of today one firm expression of interest has been raised by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain's richest men, and there are rumours a Qatari consortium may also be interested in a purchase.

If the sale did go ahead, whoever the new owner is, the expectation of the fan base is that the glory days of previous eras will return, with moments like the 1968 European Cup win and the 1999 Champions League triumph being revived.  Old Trafford has seen some memorable football moments, and the time is right for those magical days to return.
