A report in todays Daily Telegraph (09/02/2023) claims that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus want to resurrect the Super League concept, by widening its scope to include up to as many as 60 to 80 teams.
The scheme as envisaged, would replace the Champions League and is another direct challenge to the integrity of UEFA and the national league structures across Europe. Such a league would impact detrimentally on the English leagues pyramid structure and put the survival of many smaller English clubs at risk.
If such a scheme were to develop into a serious concept, then the role of a football regulator in England becomes even more important.
