An independent report on the events before last seasons Champions League Final has been made public, and it's critical of the management of the event by both UEFA, the French authorities and the French police.
Before kick off there were scenes of chaos outside the ground as ticket holding Liverpool fans were denied entrance, or were held waiting for hours on the instructions of the police, who were acting as if they expected serious crowd trouble. In some instances, innocent fans were pepper sprayed for no apparent reason. None of the misbehaviour expected came to pass from the Liverpool fans and the police reaction was uncalled for.
UEFA are criticised for poor match day organisation and for being too willing to support false accusations made about the behaviour of Liverpool fans prior to the match. The report concludes that UEFA must take the findings seriously and better planning for future large scale events must be a priority.
Liverpool are the winners of five European Cup and/or Champions League trophies and are the most successful English club in European competition, with only Manchester United and Chelsea being the other winners of the trophy from the English leagues.
